Email subject lines: What you should avoid and what you should use

1. Don’t write your subject lines in capitals

Avoid writing your email subject lines with your caps on, as doing so will increase the chances of readers dismissing your emails as being spam. As it’s extremely common for spammers to write their email subject lines in caps.

2. Also, avoid using more than one exclamation point in your email subject lines

Another mistake which is well worth avoiding is using multiple exclamation points in your email subject lines, in order to try and get your readers attention. Again scammers typically overuse exclamation points in their email subject lines, so limit yourself to using a maximum of one exclamation point per email subject line.

Although, to be honest, your email subject lines will be just as effective without using a single exclamation point.

3. Do use your readers’ first names in the subject lines of your email

The number one reason why it’s always a great idea to use your readers’ first names in your email subject lines, is that the human brain is automatically programmed to seek out your own name.

So if a reader skim reads the subject lines of their emails and sees their own name, they’ll be sure to take the time to read the whole email subject line of the email in question.

Better yet, if a reader sees their name in an email subject line they’ll also be far more likely to read the preview text of your email.

4. Do appeal to your readers’ emotions

When it comes time to craft your email subject lines, it’s a great idea to appeal to your reader’s emotions. As if your readers’ emotions are stirred by your email subject line, they’ll be sure to click on your email straight away.

5. Don’t lie in your email subject lines

Many marketers make the mistake of making bold claims in their email subject lines, that they can’t deliver on. While you may be tempted to compose sensational email subject lines, in order to increase your chance of readers clicking on and reading your marketing email, if your emails don’t deliver on the promises in your email subject lines, you’ll be sure to lose readers.

So if you don’t want to cause a lot of damage to your brand’s reputation and want to keep the numbers of your email subscription list high, it’s well worth sticking to the truth when you write your email subject lines.

6. Do talk about your brand’s current promotions and deals

If your readers are interested in your brand, they’ll be sure to be interested in your brand’s current promotions and deals. So don’t be afraid to mention your latest deals in the subject line of your emails.

If you follow all six tips listed above, you’ll be able to increase the number of readers who click on your marketing emails.
